Self Appraisal


Hello there!

I am founder of LAYWi (Life As You Want it / www.laywi.com). I designed and my team develop this internet platform for personal development and personal organisation. We had fair success but recently I have lost momentum and need to carry it forward!

So I am trying to gather my thoughts around three important attributes of personality which stands between me and my goals.

I would really appreciated feedback / comments on the way I think about these attributes and trying to resolve my approach.

Attribute 1: Ability – Possession of the means or skills to do something.
Big Claim – We are always capable of doing much more then we generally do!

Issues

  • Quite often we aren’t motivated enough (I am motivated)
  • Can’t see bigger picture or bigger picture is blur (I can see the bigger pictures too)
  • We did not started with end in mind and can’t be bothered  (I have end in mind too)

Resolution

  • Build momentum via small wins (I lacked these smalls wins I believe in continuous manner)
  • Envision the journey from start to end (I have done this many times)
  • See the rewards clearly at end (I can see that)

Attribute 2: Motivation – Self drive or reason for behaving in particular manner or way!

Big Claim – Motivation determines what we do!

Issues

  • Other aspects or offering of life are more motivating which give instant pleasure
  • Superficial wins over deep rooted motivation (Limbic part of brain which control emotions wins against Frontal Lobe – logical part of brain)

Resolution

  • Align one’s needs and wants (Seems I have both going in different directions for now)?
  • Get emotional attached to what you one’s want to achieve in life?

Attribute 3: Attitude – Settled way of thinking or feeling about something

Big Claim – Attitude determine how well we do it?

Issues

  • Is Attitude determination or discipline or dedication?
  • Or is Attitude  open minded but unwavering commitment ?

Self Awareness, the First Step towards a Desired Life


 Self Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment.

 We might quickly assume that we are self aware, but it is helpful to have a relative scale for awareness. If you have ever been in an auto accident you may have experienced everything happening in slow motion and noticing details of your thought process and the event. This is a state if heightened awareness. With practice we can learn to engage these types of heightened states and see new opportunities for interpretations in our thoughts, emotions, and conversations.

 Why Develop Self Awareness?

As you develop self awareness you are able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind. Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions. Self awareness is one of the attributes of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success.

 Self awareness is the first step in creating what you want and mastering your. Where you focus your attention, your emotions, reactions, personality and behavior determine where you go in life.

 Having self awareness allows you to see where your thoughts and emotions are taking you. It also allows you to see the controls of your emotions, behavior, and personality so you can make changes you want. Until you are aware in the moment of the controls to your thoughts, emotions, words, and behavior, you will have difficulty making changes in the direction of your life.

 Self Awareness in Relationships

Relationships are easy until there is emotional turmoil. This is the same whether you are at work or in your personal life. When you can change the interpretation in your mind of what you think you can change your emotions and shift the emotional quality of your relationships. When you can change the emotions in your relationships you open up entirely new possibilities your life.

 Having a clear understanding of your thought and, behavior patterns helps you understand other people. This ability to empathize facilitates better personal and professional relationships.

 Develop Self Awareness

Self awareness is developed through practices in focusing your attention on the details of your personality and behavior. It isn’t learned from reading a book. When you read a book you are focusing your attention on the conceptual ideas in the book. With your attention in a book you are practicing not paying attention to your own behavior, emotions and personality.

Think of learning to be mindful and self aware as learning to dance. When learning to dance we have to pay attention to how and where our feet move, our hands and body motion, what our partner is doing, music, beat, floor space, and other dancers. Self awareness isn’t learned from books and the Tango isn’t either.  LAYWi is a website cum app that has been designed to give you tools that helps you develop and enhance your self awareness by engaging in projects that give your life the meaning that you want.

Self awareness although maybe a spiritual journey but it starts with being aware of your surroundings, then your actions & reactions in it and you motivation behind them.

Tools such as personal SWOT which assess personal strengths and weaknesses, helping one pave their way with more clarity.

 

Self awareness goes a long way in contributing towards ones success, because what deters us from living the life of our ideals is our lack of understanding what we are capable of and what the weaknesses are.

Just like any path towards success, being realistic and honest with your intentions is of the utmost importance. Since the output of the tools and its features will depend on how honestly you open up.

In the process we are not telling anybody what to believe, how they should think, or what they should do. LAYWi is just sharing with people exercises in raising their self awareness. When you become more self aware you instinctively begin to see aspects of your personality and behavior that you didn’t notice before.

If you have an emotional reaction of anger or frustration, you notice many of the thoughts and small triggers that build up towards those emotions. You also notice moments when you can change the interpretations in your mind, or not believe what we are thinking. In this heightened awareness you instinctively make better choices in your thought process long before an emotional reaction or destructive behavior.

 Making changes in your behavior is much easier to do when you catch them early in the dynamic, before the momentum of thought and emotion has gathered steam.   The changes in your mind and behavior become simple and easy steps when you develop self awareness.

One thing unite us as human irrespective of geographical or social or religious differences and that is human intrinsic nature, which is to dream, dream of better tomorrow, better relationships, better jobs or career prospects, better life in general. Few more of those intrinsic characteristics of humans are ‘Be good’, ‘To improve’, ‘Seek security’, ‘Be social’ and so on.

Of course there is flip side to all of them too, like to satiate need of being ‘be good’ people  indulge in self deception and make convincing stories around it or another need ‘to improve’ people  on one hand want to improve but along side don’t want things to change which is related to being ‘in control’ and hence associate improvement to loosing control and in turn security – so reject improvement or change.

So whats the solution to this conundrum ? Well that’s what promote me to research for long time and come up with humble system called LAYWi which can be reached at www.laywi.com. 

Road-map to life, Life as you want it

Solution here is to approach yourself systemically, understanding yourself properly, stressing on yourself honestly – we at LAYWi call it ‘Define Me‘ phase. This is an iterative process and should not be expected to achieved in one evening – for you and your life are more important then that and deserve more time, thought and attention.

Refine Me‘ is next phase to ‘Define Me’ where you indulge in some honest self appraisal we call ‘Self Profiling’. You can also seek feedback from other people in your network on site (laywi.com). Under this phase, you would also indulge in some dreaming process to called ‘Visioning’, building your plans for future, where do you see yourself 10 years or 20 years from today. This is would get you and your sub-conscious mind thinking what steps would be required to reach there, what resource you need, whats the gap between you today and you in your visioned state.

Finally in this phase you would also build a ‘Value System’ for yourself. Reason to have a value system in life to have good habits which would help you in your journey like building habit to be persistent and consistent in life, being honest and diligent, developing self leadership and so on. All this good habits as your value system would help you intrinsically when going get tough.

Align and Achieve‘ is Last phase of LAYWi, here we get action oriented. We plan and act upon all goals, vision, habits we have decided to improve as part of ‘Refine Me’ phase. We can group them as projects, define the important factor which would be required by project to achieve its eventual purpose. There are a lot of questions you would answer along with process of Align and Achieve which would clear you mind of doubts and bring forth your implementation approach to you purpose in life.

Another important finding my research showed was, its important to be organised so mind is free to think properly and come up with new design for happy and successful life.

Mission of Goals!


So whats next once you have worked out your vision (refer to earlier blog Vision for life!) and worked out steps to reach it using missions (refer to earlier blog Mission for life!).

Just couple of points to recap –

Vision is long term and overarching purpose in life which one is really passionate about.

So next we need to take the vision and break it down to something mid-term and further arrange in sequence or in parallel depending what makes sense and lets call them missions. Now take these mid-term missions and further break them into immediately action-able goals.set and reach goal concept

Now we would discuss this last part of achieving the life you want. Breaking down mission into smaller objectives or goals (and further sub goals if need be) and actually working on each of them. Remember each goal works as a piece of jigsaw puzzle of life and fit somewhere to give your life a more closer picture towards your vision or ideal life. But each time one sets goal or create mission, there is always price you would have to pay on way to achieving it. So agree the price in advance you are willing to pay for life you want. Price may be inform of time spend away from loved one’s or more monetary like sacrificing holidays or new house to complete higher education or in some cases health. But on positive note, price you would pay would be much smaller and short term compared to returns you would most likely enjoy in long run and for longer term.

Remember 7 things when planning the goals: Proper planning is important before starting the upon goals but without getting too bogged (avoiding analysis paralysis) down into the process of planning and remembering the execution of goal is key.

1. Goals are S.M.A.R.T

S – Specific and significant.
M – Measurable and meaningful.
A – Appropriate and achievable.
R –  Realistic, results-oriented and rewarding.
T – timely and time-bound.

2. Always prioritise and prioritise correctly. Categorize your goals like  Financial and Career, Family and Home, Well-being so forth.
3. Yes and No are both choices and have impacts, so make a decision and stand by it.
4. Keeping It Real.
5. Know the critical path to end goals or sub goals. Make sure goals are properly defined so you know when they are complete against expected benefit(s).
6. Make sure your goal is high enough.
7. Know resources you have in advance and get help where required, like in terms of money, time, relationships. When you work towards your goals those resource would take a hit, so remember to take the price you would pay into over all equation.

Day 3 - Pic 2Remember 7 things to remember when executing your goals: After proper planning, execution holds the key to competing the goals to achieve the desired outcome.

1. Be Relentless
2. keep yourself motivated, remember like hunger for food, one need to motivate oneself regularly, may be daily.
3. Organise yourself to save time and focus. Know the difference between urgent, important, good to have and time wasting tasks.
4. Analyse yourself on SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity and Threats within you as person along with your circumstances and surroundings)
5. Break it down, act regularly like daily when possible.
6. Don’t procrastinating.
7. Review your progress and review goals regularly.

Finally 7 P’s for you positive psychology: One more factor which is important beside planning and execution towards goals is positive attitude towards your goals and life you want to achieve.
